E-cigarettes are the hip new way to get that nicotine fix. So why not use these battery-powered vaporizers to inhale caffeine?

Some people are now doing that.

Dr. John Swartzberg, head of the editorial board at the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter, advises against it.

"This is perhaps one of the most insane ideas we've come across recently," Dr. Swartzberg told me. "It is absolutely nuts and people should really avoid it."

The caffeine cartridges contain a lot of the same ingredients found in energy drinks... a variety of herbal stimulants, vitamins, flavoring agents... and who knows what else.

"So people, when they inhale all of these chemicals, they have no idea what they're getting. They have no idea about the safety or efficacy of doing this. So it's a very bad idea," Dr. Swartzberg said.

Vaping caffeine is supposed to give you more control over the amount of caffeine you get, but the Wellness Letter doesn't buy it. Dr. Swartzberg says you could easily get more caffeine than you bargained for - resulting in a racing heart, upset stomach, a feeling of lightheadedness, the jitters, agitation, or worse.
